Bologna is one of the oldest cities in Italy - its history dates back to Etruscan times. Currently, the city is the capital of the Emilia Romagna region, and an important commercial, industrial, cultural, scientific and tourism centre. It is also an important communication hub of northern Italy, where the roads and railway lines crisscross. An international airport is also located there. City is known for its well-preserved historic buildings and culinary traditions. In the year 2000 Bologna became the European Capital of Culture and in 2006 the City of Music.
Bologna is the seventh most populated city in Italy - is inhabited by 380 181 people. The average age of Bologna resident is 51 years. 12.86% of the population are young people under 18 years, whereas 27.02%, and the people of retirement age. The birth rate is 8.07 children born per 1 thousand residents. Approximately 10% of the population are immigrants, mainly from Romania, Albania and South-East Asia.
Bologna is located on the edge of the Po Valley, in the foothills of the Apennines, in the northern part of Italy. It covers an area of 140.7 km2, with its centre lying 54 m above sea level. It is characterised by a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters.
The city is an important scientific centre. Bologna is home to an oldest university in the world, founded in 1088, which educated among others Dante, Petrarca, Thomas Beckett, and Copernicus. Currently, 33 faculties run 23 majors, and the number of students exceeds 80 thousand. Large number of students comes from foreign countries, including students from Erasmus programme. Bologna is also home to the branch of Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC.
Bologna City Centre is a multi-directional communication centre, through which the city and its stakeholders agree urban and territorial changes that are happening within city area thereby promoting citizen participation.
