Klaipeda is a city in western Lithuania on the coast of the Baltic sea. It has area of 98 sq. km and population of 160 thousands inhabitants. Klaipeda is a county and municipal center and ranks third city in Lithuania in terms of its size.
Klaipeda is the oldest Lithuanian city: first mentioned in the Chronicles of Memelburg in 1252. Through its history the city has been controlled by the Teutonic Knights, the Duchy of Prussia, the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Entente States immediately after World War I, Lithuania as a result of the 1923 Klaipeda Revolt, and the Third Reich following the 1939 German ultimatum to Lithuania. The city was incorporated into Lithuania during its tenure as a Soviet Socialist Republic and has remained within Lithuania following its re-establishment as an independent state.
The port of Klaipeda is the most northern ice-free port on the east coast of the Baltic Sea. Annual cargo turnover of Klaipeda port is 35,2 mln tones (2012).
Klaipeda has a free economic zone with total area of 412 hectares and 17 foreign and Lithuanian companies operating in it (6 companies are under the design process).
There are 2 universities with about 6,9 thousands of students in Klaipeda: Klaipeda University and LCC International University.
Moreover there are 4 colleges here where studies almost 7,5 thousands of students : Klaipeda State College, University of applied Social Sciences, Lithuania Business University of Applied Sciences, Lithuanian Maritime Academy.
